destructive searches
A destructive search is the final means of ensuring any given site is free from protected species.
We have successfully carried out destructive searches for the following species:
Reptiles and Amphibians – involves the removal of turf and 100mm of topsoil in potentially suitable habitats by excavator bucket under close supervision from an ecologist
Water voles - targeted excavation under close supervision by an ecologist (particularly around known burrows)
Badgers – targeted excavation under a watching brief by an ecologist (particularly around badger setts)
Bats - careful dismantling of trees is required, lowering of branches, checking for cavities, leaving wood piled on the ground to allow evacuation (preferably leaving the wood stacked on-site)
